Sub-inspector Gopal Badane, accused in the suicide case of a woman doctor in Maharashtra's Satara district, was arrested on Saturday evening. His arrest followed that of software engineer Prashant Bankar, who was taken into custody earlier the same day. Both men were named in the doctor’s suicide note, which she wrote on her palm before her death.

The doctor, originally from Beed district, was found hanging in a hotel room in Phaltan on Thursday night. In her note, she alleged that Badane had raped her multiple times and that Bankar had subjected her to mental harassment. Badane surrendered at the Phaltan Rural Police Station, while Bankar was arrested in Pune and later presented in court, where he was remanded to police custody for four days.

The police have registered cases of rape and abetment of suicide against both men. Badane has been suspended from his duties following the allegations. The victim's relatives have expressed their outrage, demanding capital punishment for the accused. They claimed that she had repeatedly reported harassment but received no support from authorities.

Additionally, relatives alleged that political pressure was exerted on the doctor to alter medical reports, as she frequently handled autopsy duties. Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Ambadas Danve accused former BJP MP Ranjitsingh Naik Nimbalkar of pressuring the doctor, a claim Nimbalkar has denied, stating that his name is being misused in the case.

The doctor was cremated in her native village on Friday night. Her family revealed that she had aspirations to pursue further medical studies and was under financial strain due to educational loans. They highlighted that she faced threats and harassment from police officials related to her work, which contributed to her distress.
