SCRANTON, Pa. — On Saturday, runners laced up their sneakers for the second annual diabetes five-k and walk in Lackawanna County .
When eight-year-old Calla McHugh was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes two years ago, her mom, Dana, organized the first run and walk last year, raising ten thousand dollars.
McHugh spoke on why she has hosted the event for the last two years, "I do it because it's important to my family, and we want to raise awareness for all the people with type 1 diabetes. Calla's on an insulin pump, which she's doing awesome with it, but we know that there's more advances in medicine in the future, hopefully to come, so we are hopeful for that."
McHugh says nearly 300 people registered this year for the race in Scranton.
