(WJBF) — Flu season is here, and health experts say now’s the time to get protected. CVS MinuteClinic nurse practitioner Karen Kitchens joined us to talk about this year’s flu and COVID vaccines.
Flu season usually runs November through May, peaking around February. The flu shot is safe for almost everyone 18 months and older. People over 65, or under 65 with conditions like high blood pressure, cholesterol, or heart disease, are especially encouraged to get it. Clinics are already seeing flu cases and treating patients.
You cannot catch the flu from the vaccine. Mild side effects like fatigue or redness at the injection site are just the body building defenses. The same goes for COVID vaccines. Staying up to date is important because both viruses keep changing.
