Virginia extended its winning streak to six games in dramatic fashion on Saturday, holding off North Carolina 17–16 in overtime at Kenan Stadium after stopping a two-point conversion attempt on the game’s final play.
After Virginia opened the extra period with a touchdown, North Carolina responded in kind. Rather than kicking the extra point to tie, the Tar Heels opted to go for the win. Quarterback Gio Lopez rolled to his right and threw to running back Benjamin Hall, who was met near the sideline by a pair of Virginia defenders and stopped inches short of the goal line, preserving the Cavaliers’ narrow victory.
The win improved No. 16 Virginia to 7–1 overall and 5–0 in ACC play, keeping pace with Georgia Tech as one of the league’s two remaining unbeaten teams in conference action. It
