It's one of the questions drivers may ponder most often, particularly if they were driving a little faster than they had intended past a speed camera - will they be fined for going a small amount over the speed limit?

If someone goes past a speed camera doing 31mph in a 30, the answer is probably not.

But it's not always straightforward and motorists can never know for sure.

The only certain way to avoid a penalty is to stay at or under the speed limit.
