Enthusiastic gardeners are being cautioned that six little-known rules could take them by surprise whilst they're getting their outdoor areas ready for winter.

Experts from Garden Buildings Direct have urged people to avoid becoming "unwitting criminals" by getting to grips with what their garden is and isn't allowed to include.

Starting with one obscure rule that carries a potential £20,000 fine, the experts recommended people check that trees in their gardens aren't protected before damaging, working on, moving or destroying them.
