The body of the late Thai Queen Mother Sirikit was transported Sunday in a procession to the Grand Palace to be laid to rest.

A large convoy comprising dozens of vehicles left the hospital which had seen crowds of mourners gathering since Sirikit's death was announced on Friday.

Mourners lined the roads during the procession, which made its way towards Bangkok's Grand Palace.

Sirikit was held in a silver van near the front of the procession.

As the vehicle entered the palace, officials saluted and mourners wept.

"We can be proud as a nation to have had such a beloved King and Queen," said an emotional Thamaporn Monsaichol, who had been waiting since early morning for a chance to view the procession.

Funeral ceremonies for the late Queen Mother will be held for a hundred days at the Grand Palace and a mourning period of one year will be held for members of the royal family, royal servants and civil servants.

No date has been set for the cremation.
