Neighbors near Eastlake Park in Phoenix are asking for a small, unused building next to the park’s swimming pool to be torn down.

However, the building, constructed around 1930, is protected by historic preservation status and cannot be demolished for at least two years.

Eastlake Park, the oldest park in Phoenix, has deep historic roots in Phoenix’s Black community.

“The park has been home to many civil rights rallies, visits from civil right leaders and the starting point of all civil rights marches to the Capitol,” the webpage for the park’s community center states.
