On Saturday night, Ville Koivunen was busy scoring the game-winner in overtime to keep Wilkes-Barre/Scranton’s perfect start to the season alive.
His reward was a postgame plane trip from Charlotte, where the Penguins outlasted the Checkers 3-2, to Pittsburgh, where he was needed with the parent club on Sunday. Pittsburgh announced that top-line winger Rickard Rakell would miss 6-8 weeks following surgery on a broken hand, and Koivunen was promoted to take his roster spot.
“Always fun to win,” Koivunen told reporters in Cranberry Township after Sunday’s practice . “Even better when you get a call back up here. Also, pretty tired.”
