ARABI, La. — A 64-year-old Metairie man died Saturday after his SUV ran off the road and struck a steel billboard support pillar in St. Bernard Parish, according to Louisiana State Police.

The crash claimed the life of Scott Sanders. Troop B said the accident happened in Arabi around 12:30 p.m. on LA 39 at Schnell Drive. Sanders was driving a 2025 Hyundai Palisade northbound when the vehicle left the roadway and hit "a reinforced steel billboard support pillar," a release said.

State Police said Sanders was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and suffered serious injuries. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he later died.

Police do not suspect impairment, though toxicology results are pending. The crash remains under investigation.
