The Edmonton Oilers were hoping to prove Sunday that they are just a little bit better than the injury-depleted Vancouver Canucks .
With the Canucks on a three-game losing streak and missing their best player, it was a life preserver the floundering Oilers needed desperately.
They couldn’t reach it.
It was a perfect time to face the Canucks, who are missing a handful of regulars in addition to Quinn Hughes, but if you’ve been watching the Oilers lately, you know this is a pretty good time to be playing Edmonton, too.
So, with both sides ripe for the picking, all that remained to be seen was whose head would be rolling around in the basket.
And Vancouver’s Kiefer Sherwood made sure it was Edmonton’s with his game-winning goal 1:43 into overtime to seal a 4-3 victory.
