Most of Queensland is bracing for thunderstorms this afternoon, but Brisbane should be spared any further onslaught.

Brisbane was hammered by destructive winds and large hail yesterday, leaving tens of thousands of people without power across a sweltering day today that reached 38 degrees.

More than 20,000 customers remain without power in Brisbane, and a further 5000 across the rest of the south-east region, despite Energex crews working around the clock to restore power.

There is no storm activity forecast for Brisbane this afternoon, although the Bureau of Meteorology said the city may see some showers.

Thunderstorms are likely, however, across the rest of the state, except the far south and Cape York Peninsula.
