Chief Justice of India Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai has recommended Justice Surya Kant as his successor, forwarding the proposal to the Centre, sources have said.
Justice Surya Kant, currently the second senior-most judge of the Supreme Court after CJI Gavai, is poised to become the 53rd Chief Justice of India on November 24, a day after Gavai’s retirement on November 23.
CJI Gavai, who assumed office on May 14, 2025, made the formal recommendation to the Union Law Ministry in keeping with the established collegium convention of naming the next senior-most judge as successor.
Justice Surya Kant was elevated to the Supreme Court on May 24, 2019, and will serve as CJI until his retirement on February 9, 2027, giving him a tenure of a little over one year and two months.
