Sixty-six panchayats in Punjab recently passed resolutions requesting parole for Sikh militant Jagtar Singh Hawara, who has been convicted of the 1995 assassination of former Punjab chief minister Beant Singh.
The panchayats appealed to Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta that Hawara be given parole on humanitarian grounds to meet his ailing octogenarian mother.
Hawara’s lawyer, Jaspal Singh Manjhpur, said that an email containing the 66 resolutions has been sent to CM Gupta’s office. The convicted militant is currently lodged in Delhi’s Mandoli Central Jail, where he is serving a life sentence.
