One of the pillars of democracy, the press, is under attack. The news media have been losing subscribers since the advent of the internet, and it may come to a point where it is unable to continue.

People are now relying on social media for their information and social media is an untrustworthy source. The result of this is that the news media are becoming economically unviable and the unbiased information that we rely on may be silenced.

Compounding this problem is the Trump administration’s attacks on the media, such as PBS, as well as science, truth and democracy itself. We all need to understand that the loss of the free press is an existential threat to democracy.
