COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - Overnight, Melissa strengthened into a Category 5 Major Hurricane with max sustained winds of 160 MPH.

Melissa will continue to drift slowly over the Caribbean throughout the day. The northward motion of Melissa won’t begin until Tuesday, where it is expected to make landfall on Jamaica’s coastline. Significant impacts such as flooding and strong winds are expected in Jamaica and Cuba through Wednesday.

From there, Melissa will accelerate over the Bahamas and move into the Atlantic by the end of this week. It will likely make a close call with Bermuda as a hurricane by the upcoming weekend.
