Glasgow is housing 400% more asylum seekers than planned as the city faces a housing emergency . ‌

The figure was contained in evidence to a Westminster inquiry into asylum seeker accommodation . ‌

The Home Office, through private sector firm Mears, is responsible for ensuring people who are fleeing persecution are housed while their application is considered . ‌

Glasgow has for years been a sanctuary for asylum seekers but in recent years Mears has used other council areas in Scotland.

However, the roll out of a national dispersal system has proved to be slow and Glasgow still houses over 90% of asylum seekers north of the border.

In evidence to the Home Affairs Committee, Frances McMeeking of the Glasgow City Health and Social Care Partnership said:
