FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — As the federal government shutdown enters its fourth week, funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is about to run out . According to the United States Department of Agriculture ( USDA ), no benefits will be awarded after Nov. 1.
Right now, approximately 42 million Americans benefit from SNAP. In Arkansas, there are over 200,000 people that rely on SNAP for food security.
Programs here in Arkansas and across the nation are preparing for SNAP recipients to no longer receive benefits.
"People are hungry, and I don't think people realize how many people here are hungry," Hattie Hamilton, the interim director of the River Valley Regional Food Bank said. "Arkansas says one in five [people], and children is one in four."
