SANFORD, Maine — Firefighters quickly extinguished a fire that broke out on the fourth floor of a vacant mill building on Emery Lane.

Fire Chief Scott Susi said crews were called to the mill Oct. 27 for reports of "smoking showing from the roof."

"We called in a first full alarm response and then upgraded to make sure we would have the people and equipment here to fight the fire if we had to," Susi said.

Crews quickly located the fire on the fourth floor and immediately knocked it down. Susi said crews remained on scene to search the building.

"We have had crews on every floor from every corner making sure there was nobody left in the building," Susi said.

Susi said they believe the fire may have been caused by a "warming fire from the homeless."
