DALLAS — More than 3.5 million Texans are at risk of food insecurity as the government shutdown threats November payments of supplemental assistance.

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is a federal program that provides monthly payments to qualifying individuals and families.

Due to the shutdown, payments normally made on the first day of the month will be delayed. Those payments will be made once the government reopens, but many families rely on those payments to buy groceries.

The North Texas Food Bank and Tarrant Area Food Bank, the two largest food banks serving the greater DFW area, have resources in place to ensure families can put food on the table while their SNAP payments are in limbo.
