Renegade Nationals MP Barnaby Joyce is being urged to return to the party fold, as his ongoing threats to jump ship overshadow the coalition's rebuild.

While Mr Joyce has so far held onto his membership amid a stoush over climate policy, the former party leader did not attend the Nationals partyroom meeting on Monday.

Mr Joyce has also cited his ruinous relationship with Nationals leader David Littleproud as a reason for his split.

Nationals senator Matt Canavan said he hoped Mr Joyce and Mr Littleproud could reconcile their differences quickly after the pair held a brief meeting on Monday.

"I think it's a good thing that David's reached out to him, and I hope they can repair that," he told AAP.

"As I say, family is much stronger when it stays together and hopefully we can do that."
