King County is on track to badly miss its affordable housing goals, and is well short of the funds needed to achieve them.

The county would need to scrounge up around $4 billion a year to fill the gap, according to a report released earlier this month on King County’s housing needs.

The Metropolitan King County Council commissioned the report from the research firm ECOnorthwest to track the county’s progress on reaching a goal to create 308,677 new homes between 2019 and 2044.

Over half of those homes must be affordable to those earning 80% of the area median income, which is $84,850 for a single-person household in King County. The highest needs are for deeply affordable and supportive housing for residents at 30% or below area median income.
