A 42-year-old man died early today after crashing into a concrete pillar along Nimitz Highway near Valkenberg Street, Honolulu police said.
Police said the motorist was driving westbound at a high rate of speed about 3:38 a.m. when his vehicle struck a concrete support pillar near the intersection. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The man was wearing a seat belt, police said. Speed appears to have been a factor, but it was not immediately known whether drugs or alcohol were involved.
This was Oahu’s 70th traffic fatality of the year, compared with 38 at the same time last year. The investigation remains ongoing.
