DULUTH, Minn. — A contractor will burn four large piles of ‘buckthorn’ at Hartley Park, starting this week, so you might see smoke in the area.

The park will stay open all week.

City officials say the work should take one to two days to complete, as long as the weather cooperates.

Park users should avoid actively burning material and give the contractors space to do their work if they encounter the buckthorn piles.

Buckthorn is a highly invasive shrub that can be difficult to get rid of.

It doesn’t have natural competitors in the area.

It can form impenetrable layers of vegetation that choke out native vegetation.
