Maverick U.S. Sen. John Fetterman (D-Penn.) stunningly bucked his party over the continuing government shutdown.

Fetterman on Thursday voted with the Republicans in an unsuccessful effort to reopen the government, the New York Post reported.

The Senate by a 54-46 vote failed to advance a GOP bill that would have paid certain federal workers during the shutdown.

Sixty votes were needed for passage.

Fetterman, who has frequently gone against his Democratic colleagues, was one of just three Democrats to join with the Republicans.

“It’s an easy, easy choice to pick my country over the party, especially in circumstances like this,” Fetterman said on the Fox News program “Saturday in America.”
