LENOIR COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) - Dozens of Lenoir County workers are facing permanent layoffs as Safeway Logistics LLC exits its delivery contract with Amazon, according to the company.
According to a spokesperson for Amazon, Amazon uses independent contractors to fulfill delivery routes called the Amazon Delivery Service Partner program.
Safeway Logistics LLC was one of those independent contractors and has announced they are leaving the program, which is why the mass layoffs are to occur - a change that happens fairly often, according to the Amazon spokesperson.
Because Safeway is leaving the Amazon facility on Enterprise Boulevard, 68 drivers and four office staff will be laid off, according to a North Carolina Department of Commerce document. It says that it will happen all at once by N
