Syracuse, N.Y. -- Syracuse head coach Fran Brown said that redshirt senior linebacker Derek McDonald will apply for a medical redshirt and a sixth year of college eligibility, and that he hopes he’ll use it with the Orange next season.
Brown said that McDonald suffered a hip injury early this season and they arrived at a mutual decision that undergoing surgery was the best option for him.
McDonald played just four games before the surgery, which should allow him to receive a medical redshirt for this season. He made eight tackles.
“When his hip was bothering him, I just told him, ‘Why don’t you go get surgery?’ Brown said. ”That should take care of it. He had a bad injury that he needed to get surgery for."
