In February, the U.S. Capitol Police reported that it investigated an increasing number of threats against lawmakers for the second year in a row.
Last year, the cases of concerning statements and threats against members of Congress, their staffs and families, rose to almost 9,500 — more than double the amount of investigations in 2017, according to Capitol Police. Last year also saw a pair of assassination attempts against President Donald Trump, one of them in Butler.
That was before an April arson attack against Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro. Before Minnesota Democratic lawmakers and their spouses were shot. And before conservative activist Charlie Kirk was assassinated at a rally in Utah.
