NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) – The federal government plans to deport a New York City student despite an ongoing legal challenge to his recent detention.
The 16-year-old Bronx high school student, identified as E.J.C.C., was arrested and detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement on Oct. 23, according to the NYCLU.
The NYCLU is fighting the teenager’s detention in court, but a spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security told PIX11 News on Monday that it plans to deport him. The DHS spokesperson said E.J.C.C. and his mother were issued orders of removal in 2024. His mother left the country for fear of ICE detention.
“Fortunately, now [E.J.C.C.] will be reunited with family,” the DHS spokesperson said.
