The city has been plagued by thefts of metal from public spaces over the past couple of years. Streetlights have gone dark because wiring has been ripped out for the price of the copper. Brass plaques honoring city history and fallen soldiers have vanished from the streetscape.

The City Council recently approved a program of rewards for information leading to arrests and convictions in the theft of metal — a $5,000 reward for felony grand theft, $1,000 for misdemeanor theft.
