WASHINGTON — Amazon announced a new round of major job layoffs, cutting as many as 14,000 corporate jobs.

The retailer announced the job cuts in a statement released on Tuesday, nearly a day after multiple media outlets reported on the layoffs. The e-commerce retailer highlighted that it would ramp up spending on artificial intelligence.

"The reductions we’re sharing today are a continuation of this work to get even stronger by further reducing bureaucracy, removing layers, and shifting resources to ensure we’re investing in our biggest bets and what matters most to our customers’ current and future needs," said Beth Galetti, the senior vice president of people experience and technology at Amazon.
