WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — The Kansas Highway Patrol says a suspected drunken driver was taken into custody after he was spotted by an off-duty trooper.
The agency said it happened late Saturday night in Independence.
An off-duty trooper reported a possible drunken driver, and Master Trooper Branden Bales found the vehicle near 10th and Laurel streets.
While observing the driver, he heard a gunshot coming from the car.
KHP said Bales and Independence Police made a traffic stop and took the man into custody.
Troopers said the driver had accidentally fired a gun inside the car while attempting to unload it.
The man had a blood alcohol content level nearly twice the legal limit, according to troopers, and was found with marijuana and paraphernalia.
