WASHINGTON — The 38th Annual 17th Street High Heel Race returns to Dupont Circle on Tuesday, bringing one of D.C.’s most iconic and beloved LGBTQ+ celebrations back to the streets of Northwest Washington.

The race blends Halloween spirit, queer pride, community, and some athleticism. Each year, thousands line 17th Street to cheer on hundreds of participants, many in towering stilettos, elaborate wigs, punny costumes, and full-on drag, as they sprint from P Street to S Street. What began nearly four decades ago as a friendly wager among bartenders and drag performers at JR's Bar has grown into an official District event celebrating the city's LGBTQ+ history and culture.
