NORTH HERO, Vt. (WCAX) - Authorities on Monday identified the man who died in a canoe accident in Lake Champlain last week.

Vermont State Police say Paul Council, 67, of Woodbury, and Michael Bagiackas, 71, of Montpelier, set out in a canoe from North Hero last Tuesday afternoon.

They say the boat capsized, and both men were separated.

Council swam to Knight Island and was stuck there overnight. On Wednesday morning, he found a canoe and alerted authorities.

Bagiackas’ body was found nearby.
