PHOENIX (AZFamily) — One of the largest school districts in Arizona is planning additional budget cuts and staff reductions, the superintendent announced on Monday.

After previous cuts, Phoenix Union High School District (PXU) Superintendent Thea Andrade says an additional $20 million in budget reductions are needed for the 2026-27 school year, followed by (based on current projections) another $15 million for the following school year to ensure the district is “financially solvent.” But before those cuts, the district plans to reduce staffing by 6% in phases from December through February 2026.

“I know this information is difficult to receive, and I honor the wide range of emotions that our community is feeling,” Andrade said in a letter to district staff.
