Former Sangamon County Deputy Sean Grayson testified in his own defense today, accused of murdering Sonya Massey while responding to an intruder call at her home in July 2024. Grayson told jurors he fired because he believed Massey was about to throw boiling water on him. He admitted he had a Taser but wasn’t confident it would work due to distance and her clothing. Grayson was the first defense witness after prosecutors rested their case. During cross-examination, prosecutors questioned why his written account came days after the shooting. Closing arguments are expected Wednesday.
