BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WBRC ) - A woman has been sentenced after pleading guilty to the 2020 death of a 1-year-old.

According to court documents, in July 2025, TyKeila Johnson, 38, plead guilty to a reduced charge of reckless manslaughter in the death of 1-year-old Kar’Mynn Brachelle Gaines.

Birmingham Police began investigating after Gaines died on Dec. 10, 2020. Gaines suffered blunt force injuries at a home in the 600 block of Carraway Boulevard on Nov. 16, 2020 .

Court records say Johnson will serve 10 years, split to serve 18 months in the Alabama Department of Corrections, with the remainder suspended for three years on probation. Her probation will be split between 18 months on state probation and 18 months unsupervised.
