GRAND FORKS — The ongoing government shutdown has payments for federal workers up in the air, including for air traffic controllers.
A University of North Dakota professor and former air traffic controller says these workers play an important role in flight safety. At larger airports, they direct communication to pilots and help facilitate arrivals and departures.
Although there is added uncertainty and stress for controllers, experts say travelers should not be worried.
"There's a shortfall of controller certified controllers right now anyway. And then add on top of that, not getting paid and everything like that. And then, you know, it's a very dedicated group of people that are working there. So, I wouldn't have any reservations about going on a trip or anything like that," said Crai
