High demand and limited funding - those are the issues local governments are facing as they try to help those in need of housing help.
The Housing Choice Voucher, known as Section 8, is a lifeline for many low-income families in need of rental assistance. The program is federally funded and is administered by local governments.
Section 8 tenants typically pay 30% of their monthly income on rent, and the voucher covers the rest. The tenant must find a rental within a predetermined amount.
As South Florida rents rise, it creates several issues for the program.
Keisha Guyton says she struggled to find a landlord willing to rent for the amount of her Section 8 voucher when she was looking for a home in 2021.
“I wasn't working at the time. I had lost my job,” Guyton said.
