FARGO — SNAP benefits for nearly 500,000 North Dakotans and Minnesotans are set to be paused if the federal government shutdown continues into November, prompting local food banks to prepare for increased demand, particularly in rural communities.
The Great Plains Food Bank is gearing up for mobile distributions, similar to disaster relief efforts, to reach households facing severe need.
"We know it’s a lifeline for so many," said Marsha Paulson, chief philanthropy officer for the food bank.
The organization works with 196 pantries and shelters. With a potential shutdown looming, officials are sourcing products to supply their partner network.
