ATTLEBORO — Jury selection began Monday in Fall River Superior Court for the trial of a Guatemalan man charged in what is believed to have been one of the oldest cold cases in the city’s history.

Mario R. Garcia, 52, was arrested in December 2022 in Guatemala as a fugitive in connection with the 1991 killing of a man in Attleboro.

Garcia was arraigned in April 2023 in Fall River Superior Court after waiving extradition in Guatemala.

He was ordered held without bail after pleading not guilty to the Nov. 16, 1991 killing of Jesus Ismael Recinos Garcia , 28, outside his home on Dean Street.

Garcia was 19 when, authorities say, he fatally stabbed Recinos Garcia, a married father of three children, in the chest with a butcher knife after a night out drinking.
