SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) - We’re now on day 27 of the government shutdown.
Because of that, many states can’t issue November SNAP benefits until funding is restored — including Indiana and Michigan.
That means about one in 11 people in Indiana could lose access to food, and now local community members are stepping up with possible solutions.
Several members of South Bend’s Black Lives Matter chapter are calling on the city to hold an emergency meeting. They want to discuss using up to $4.8 million in cash reserves from the city’s general and rainy day funds to help feed thousands of SNAP-dependent residents in St. Joseph County.
