ROCHESTER, Minn.- According to the US Department of Agriculture around 600,000 birds have been reported with highly pathogenic avian influenza across Minnesota this October.
USDA reports have had no cases in southeast Minnesota, but Dr. Carol Cardona, the Pomeroy Endowed Chair in Avian Health at the University of Minnesota's Department of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences says many remain prepared for a potential outbreak.
She says for over a decade there have been a few outbreaks of the disease before the continuous seasonal outbreaks the state has been having since 2022.
Many farmers across the state have adopted biosecurity measures as a result of that history, keeping birds inside during the spring and fall, keeping feed away from wild birds and limiting visitors from outside.
