Australian girls are being targeted by sadistic young men who hunt and abuse their victims as if they were characters in a violent video game, the new federal police chief has revealed as she urges parents to be alert to the disturbing global phenomenon.

Australian Federal Police chief Krissy Barrett will use her first major speech since taking on the role to reveal that three local arrests have been made and 59 alleged offenders identified as members of new decentralised online crime networks that have alarmed authorities across the Western world.

The AFP has established a new taskforce and the Five Eyes international intelligence sharing network has set up a new body to target these “crimefluencer” offenders, Barrett will tell the National Press Club on Wednesday.
