NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - Due to the ongoing U.S. government shutdown, federal dollars are not paying for food assistance programs starting in November.
Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry has declared a state of emergency, with more than 800,000 residents who rely on Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits at risk of losing their assistance starting Saturday (Nov. 1).
However, some Louisiana lawmakers have proposed a stopgap solution -- redirecting funds from the Louisiana Department of Health’s balance to temporarily cover some of the SNAP shortfall.
“We have a lot of smart people at the capitol to make sure this gets done,” Sen. Cameron Henry (R-Metairie) said.
