The Alberta government is taking decisive action to end the province-wide teachers’ strike, introducing Bill 2, the Back to School Act, and announcing its intent to invoke the notwithstanding clause to ensure schools reopen without delay.

The move, unveiled Monday, would override certain Charter provisions if needed to enforce a return to work and implement a new four-year collective agreement. Justice Minister Mickey Amery said the clause is a necessary tool to prevent “irreparable harm” to student learning. “Our government will not hesitate to use every available legal measure in defence of students,” he said.
