Gilbert Town Manager Patrick Banger was philosophical last week as he discussed his decision to leave for Glendale, where he becomes city manager Jan. 12.

“Think of yourself as dead. You have lived your life. Now take what’s left and live it properly,” he said, quoting second-century Roman Emperor and Stoic philosopher Marcus Aurelius.

The prospect of a new challenge in the last decade of his career prompted him to leave his post of 14 years here.

His departure comes at a tumultuous time for the town, with residents reeling under rapidly rising utility bills, imminent municipal budget deficits and Gilbert at the brink of complete build-out.
