Queensland’s controversial freeze on puberty blockers for young transgender patients has been quashed, after the Supreme Court found the directive did not comply with the law.

Justice Peter Callaghan handed down the ruling on Tuesday, determining that the temporary ban introduced earlier this year failed to meet procedural requirements and should be lifted immediately.

The decision came after a mother of a 14-year-old boy launched legal action against the Queensland government, which in January became the first state to halt new prescriptions of hormone treatments for minors diagnosed with gender dysphoria.

The court heard that Queensland Health’s chief executive had not properly undertaken the process required before implementing the restriction.
