The impact of Hurricane Melissa is being felt in our state with so many having ties to Jamaica.

Connecticut is home to the fifth-largest Jamaican community in the country with about 61,000 people living here from the island.

“I called every day and stuff and check up on them,” Gerald Gray said.

Gray has been calling his family in Manchester Parish, Jamaica to make sure they’re prepared and ready for Hurricane Melissa.

“I think they’re batten down meaning taking extra precautions with plys and stuff by the windows,” he said.

Marvin Millington said connection has been spotty on the island, but he’s able to talk with his family in St. Elizabeth Parish over WhatsApp, a popular free messaging app.
