The Australian Federal Police is warning that young girls are being "hunted, stalked and drawn-in" by men using online networks, who coerce them into carrying out serious acts of violence on themselves, their siblings or pets, in a "twisted type of gamification".
New AFP Commissioner Krissy Barrett will use her first speech at the National Press Club on Wednesday to announce the creation of Taskforce Pompilid to crack down on these networks, as the agency embarks on a broader push to stop online harm spilling into the real world.
"In Australia, 59 alleged offenders have been identified as being members of some of these prolific decentralised online crime networks," she will say.
